    « Back in the director's chair... | I'm back! »

    October 09, 2003

You really put the "eat" in "meat"...

    Consider the following…

    Name of creature: Chicken

Food made of said creature: Chicken

    Name of creature: Fish

Food made of said creature: Fish

    Name of creature: Cow

Food made of said creature: Beef

    Name of creature: Lamb

Food made of said creature: Mutton

    Name of creature: Pig

Food made of said creature: Pork

It wouldn’t be at all unusual for somebody to order a chicken sandwich or some chicken Parmesan, but when’s the last time you heard somebody ask the deli for a pound of ground cow, or half a dozen pig chops? What gives? On some subtle, semantic level, are we queasy about eating fellow mammals?

Dear god, and you're an English teacher? Norman Conquest? Infusion of French language into Anglo-Norman upper classes? French words adopted for snooty food -- ergo, anyone could eat chicken or fish, but you had to be rich for your bouef.

It was linguistic snobbery, pure and simple, and lingers to this day. Consider that most of our dirty words come from old English (and/or Germanic) roots, whereas their alternatives come from French or Latin (via the ol' Catholic influence.) You know -- piss instead of urinate, shit instead of feces, etc., etc. It wasn't our attitudes about things that gave us this distinction -- it was our attitude about proper language. If England had invaded France in the 11th century, I'm sure that they'd call the animal bouef and the food cow.

Just think, folks--this is a mere fraction of the knowledge which will be mine once I've eaten Jon's brains. Seriously. It's been on my list of things to do.

    Mm. Brains. Sweet, sweet brains...

Bubble bursting time... I believe The Hard Rock Cafe (or similiar sounding restaurants at Universal City Walk...it's been a while) had a "Pig Sandwich" on the menu. Yes I ordered it, and if you were there, you could have hear me do so...so there. I think for dinner I'll have a salad and some nice grilled cow, hmmmm cow...
